Centre ruling party has sprung another surprise for presidential election with the nomination of Ram Nath Kovind who is seen as the leader head of the weaker section with his continous lifelong support of Dalit and oppressed sections.

BJP President Amit Shah has played another political master card by projecting the current Bihar Governor name Ram Nath Kovind for the prestigious presidential position with full support as the Joint candidate for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) respectively. This decision was taken at the party parliamentary board meeting with all the seniors’ ministers of the Union government including Amit Shah and PM Modi as well.

Mr Kovind (71) has been part of RSS with causes that are related to Dalits exclusively. He also held position of Rajya Sabha member twice from 1994 to 2006 and later being appointed as the Bihar Governer general in 2015. Choosing a dalit nominee for the Presidential position also throws the party image for working on upper caste only.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was of full praise for Mr. Kovind describing him as “a farmer’s son, who comes from a humble background” and who has “devoted his life to public service and worked for the poor and marginalised.” He even called upon Opposition Congress party Chief Sonia Gandhi and former PM Manmohan Singh after their meeting for presidential nomination was announced.

If selected, Ram Nath Kovind will become the Second Dalit President of the India, after the late K.R. Narayannan who held the office from 1997 to 2002.

With Dalit as nominee for President there will be few parties who will now be fully supporting his candidature. With BSP dalit leader Mayawati saying “As he is a Dalit, we are positive on his name, but only if the opposition doesn’t announce a popular Dalit name (too),”

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar also shown positive signs but there will be meeting of opposition leaders before finalising his decisions. While others from South Andhra Pradesh’s TDP, Odhisa’s BJD, Telangana TRS and Tamil Nadu AIADMK have agreed with PM Modi’s candidature already.

While the opposition will soon held meeting but positive signs coming from all corners is that Mr. Ram Nath Kovind might be selected after all.
