Now BJP Legislator Wants Momos Banned

BJP lawmaker MLC Ramesh Arora from Jammu is on another spree for banning the street most liked food today i.e. Momos (Dumpling) saying this product with Ajinomoto(MSG) is more hazardous than alcohol and psychotic drugs respectively.

Ramesh Arora, who is part member of the legislative council, believes the salt used inside in these Momos (Ajinomoto), a flavour enhancer is harmful for health and causes cancer altogether making it worth banning for making the future generation secure. Wherever he goes public meetings, party meets or any function he is seen as promoting the ban on this addicted food from Indian Streets. His campaign has resulted in one-third consumption of Momos in Jammu only.

Momos which is considered a Tibetan dish has become one of the most popular dishes among people of all ages for their unique taste and different styles available in the market these days. These stuffs dumplings are available in veg and non-veg versions with stuffing making the main difference. Fried, Steamed, Tandoori these Momos have become the king of Indian streets in the last decade or so.

But one of their main ingredients has been the cause of concern i.e. MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) or also known as Ajinomoto (Chinese salt) in the market is part of some controversies related to health. Used as flavour enhancer this  product is extensively by street foods stalls for enticing young generation and that has propelled the BJP legislator to make stand for banning food based on Ajinomoto. Arora was trolled on twitter for making steps against Momos.

Quick Facts about the Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) Salt used as flavour enhancer in Momos

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this MSG salt unsafe as early as 2004.
  • USFDA (United States Food and Drugs Administration on the other hand has cleared the Monosodium Glutamate safe for general use
  • Out of 26 countries that use MSG salt extensively only 8 have banned this product in their land respectively.
  • Indian Research Institute of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose found in their study for 2007 that Ajinomoto (MSG) as one of the primary causes for stomach cancer
