The 3rd edition of the International Yoga Day was marked with a rainy start but that could not dampen the spirit of the participants as they practised some of the age old yogic poses. Addressing the massive audience, Modi said that apart from “fitness”, yoga is the medium to achieve “wellness”.
Just like several other revolutionary ideas that the world followed thereafter, yoga too has its root in ancient India. Although first mentioned in Rig Veda, yoga has its roots not only in Hinduism but also Jainism and Buddhism. A broad term that envelopes several disciplines, the asanas of yoga not only that leads to the enhancement of mental and physical health but at the same time takes one closer to the spiritual reality.
Not only in India but also in the west, yoga has been welcomed with open arms. In fact yoga features in the list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. It was Swami Vivekananda who took the initiative to glorify the power of yoga in the western world during the late 19th and early 20th century.
Apart from ensuring a well balance mental and physical health, the world today admits that yoga is the answer to several complications that even medical science fails to cure.
150 countries across the globe coordinated with Indian mission to commemorate the 3rd IDY at venues that hold historic importance. Be it the Trafalgar square in London, Eiffel Tower in Paris, Central Park in New York or China’s Great Wall, yoga lovers all over the globe were seen practising yoga asanas in large numbers.
