Walking into an operating theater with a guitar and then strumming it when the doctors operate on the brain! Well, it might sound that you are being told about a story of a fictitious superhero but it actually happened in a Bengaluru hospital when doctors “burned” parts of the brain of techie turned musician Tushar (name changed) to eradicate a neurological disorder.

Tushar, who underwent the surgery last week that lasted for almost 7 hours, was suffering from dystonia as a result of which three fingers on his left hand was cramped. According to the doctors, the illness occurred due to extensive use of muscles which caused abnormal and involuntary flexion.

Tushar, who first experience the cramps while playing his guitar more than a year and a half ago, had to play the instrument during the surgery too as the doctors had to locate the exact areas of the brain which was responsible for initiating abnormal tremors in his muscles.

One of the senior neurologists from the University of British Columbia Dr. Sanjiv C C said, “This problem occurred when he tried to play the instrument and real-time feedback was important for us to ascertain the exact location of the target to be repaired.”
